Woman overboard! Get swept away rafting Gauley River

The Second Drop of the almost quarter-mile long Class V rapid, Lost Paddle on the Upper Gauley -- otherwise known as Hawaii 5-Oh.
The raging Gauley River has just bucked me off
my raft and sucked me into its depths, swishing me around like a
mouthful of Listerine before spitting me out downstream.
I emerge unscathed, exuberant and feeling deliciously alive.
It's a ride I'll never forget.
For just six weekends every fall, the floodgates on the dam at Summersville Lake open,
stoking 25 miles of world-class West Virginia rapids.
This year's season starts Sept. 5 and runs through Oct. 19.
So you've just got time to grab a paddle and take the plunge.
Based on an overnight trip I took last September, here's what you'd be in for.
Full of butterflies, I report with about 45 other rafters at 8 a.m. sharp to ACE Adventure Resort
near Beckley, W.Va.
With me in my testosterone-heavy crew, ranging in
age from 15 to 50-something, are my ...more

Rafting thrills on the wild White Salmon River

HUSUM, Wash. (AP) - The rope swing looked a bit lonely, and more than a little hazardous, hanging over a cliff high above the White Salmon River.
Three years ago the swing would have dropped you safely into the deep waters of Northwest Reservoir, while today it would result in broken bones or worse during an 80-foot plummet into the gorge of this transformed Columbia River tributary.
The lowest section of the White Salmon has changed in many ways since the removal of Condit Dam in September 2012. It replaced a century-old reservoir with a totally new stretch of river, restored salmon runs and made historical landmarks out of old rope swings.
"The crazy part is how quickly the river has recovered," said Zach Collier, who guided our 12-foot raft down this new stretch of river. "Unless you knew the story, you'd never ...more

So who is Nada?

Nada Slackline
Many of you may have been getting emails from someone called “Nada” and wondering who she is, especially as she asks so many questions! So we thought we’d turn the tables and interview her for a change! So lets get you all familiar with her

Nada – how did you get into rafting?

“I started dealing with competitive rafting in 2006. In 2008 I was in a Serbian team paddling in the back right position. I participated in the Euro Cups in Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and was active paddling at them until 2012. I was also part of the national team at the 2009 and 2010 WRC as well as the Euro Champs in Italy 2010.”

And you stopped competing – why was that?

“After several unpleasant experiences in the competitive rafting world in 2011, I decided to withdrew from active paddling. But since I’m hooked on this sport and cannot live without it I didn’t stop being interested in what happens in the ...more

Business Floods In For Inflatable Dinghy Company

Business Floods In For Inflatable Dinghy Company
With a population of 1.35 billion it is hardly surprising that there are plenty of customers for the growing number of tourism attractions in China, as these snaps of tourists hiring inflatable dinghies at a newly opened activity centre show.

Ever since doors opened for dinghy hire outside the city of Sanmenxia, which lies on the Yellow River in western China’s Henan Province, business has quite literally been flooding in.

And with very few rules governing the way the rafting companies operate, it has led to a mass of boats being launched onto the river with little regard for how many are already on there and how many are coming after.

In the recent summer heatwave those looking for something cool as a way of spending the summer has brought an additional flood of people to the river, many of whom said they were hoping to escape the crushes on ...more

Now, a fresh permit for each river in which you raft

DEHRADUN: The state tourism department has made it mandatory for rafters to take separate permits for each river. Earlier, one permit would allow rafters to go rafting in any of the state's rivers. Rafters contend the new policy would harm rafting in the state, and are threatening to shift to Himachal Pradesh. RC Bhardwaj, head of adventure tourism, said, "Rafters will now have to take separate permits for rafting in each river. Till now, rafters would carry out rafting on any river they wanted, with just one permit." Arvind Bhardwaj, owner of a Rishikesh-based rafting company, told TOI, "Along with a separate permit, the ...more

Rafting the river of time: Riding the Colorado

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz

Although every daylight hour of the five-night rafting trip I took recently down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park offered a steady flow of jaw-dropping vistas, my most poignant moment came around 2 one morning.
Unzipping the tent flap, I stumbled into the night and down the 20 sandy yards to the river’s edge to answer nature’s call. Before long, I realized the only sound I could hear was the low, gravely grumble of the river that has flowed there for millions of years.
I looked around at the setting. The full moon had already set beneath the towering cliffs behind me, which cast their dark shadows over our campsite. But the sheer redwall limestone face on the opposite bank, an unbroken expanse maybe a mile long and 1,000 feet high, shimmered with a filigreed, opalescent glow against the ebony slash of a ...more

Venturing down the Nooksack: Rafting expedition offers unique experience

The town of Glacier sits in the shadow of Mount Baker on the west edge of North Cascades National Park.
The North Fork Nooksack River flows through the trees at a quick pace, fueled by the continuous snow melt from the mountains.
Rocks and boulders dragged down by the water rise up to form obstructions and narrow channels, churning the water into a froth to create rapids.
It is the only white water rafting opportunity in Whatcom County, a summer activity waiting to be conquered just an hour east of Bellingham along the Mount Baker Highway.
Don Martin, operations manager and river guide for River Recreation, said rafting in Washington is special because each river offers its own microclimate, from the deserts of central and eastern Washington to the lush forested locales of western Washington.
Martin, who has been navigating Washington rivers for 22 years, said the Nooksack River offers rafters sights of some of most beautiful scenery in Washington.
"Short of renting a helicopter, the river is the best way to view Mount Baker," he said.
Martin said awareness of rafting opportunities in Washington has dwindled since the closure of the Washington Tourism Bureau in 2011.
"I attribute it to the fact that Washington hasn't marketed itself as an adventure state," Martin said. "It's frustrating to try to buck the public perspective that we're all about the Space Needle and coffee."
River Recreation operates out of Monitor, Washington, just west of Wenatchee, and makes trips to the Nooksack every weekend and on weekdays when there are enough people registered. It runs from July to Aug. 15, when the salmon return for spawning.
Martin has had to market aggressively to keep revenue flowing and is puzzled by the lack of rafting awareness from Washington locals.
"There is so much of Washington you haven't seen if you aren't on the river," he said.
Paul Engel, owner and guide for Wild and Scenic River Tours, said most people think of Nooksack River as the canoe leg for the annual Ski-to-Sea race, but the river offers much more boating opportunities people aren't aware of.
The Nooksack is divided into three main sections: the North Fork, Middle Fork and South Fork. The only section for rafting is the North Fork.
The 8-mile run starts with class three intermediate rapids (out of six classes) and ...more

Concerns Addressed Over Truckee River Rafting Trash

With the commercial rafting operations on the Truckee River over for the year, Placer County is working with partners to provide cleanup of the trash and debris along the river.

Although the commercial companies closed, there is at least another month left in the rafting season. Placer County Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, working with the Tahoe National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) of the U.S. Forest Service, the Truckee River Watershed Council and Placer County staff, created and financed a management plan to cover river cleanup for the remainder of the rafting season.
"While the rafting companies collect a user fee and are required by permit to cleanup during their commercial rafting season, after they shut down, the responsibility for ensuring the cleanup has historically fallen to no one," said Supervisor Montgomery, who's Fifth District encompasses Placer County's portion of Lake Tahoe and a large stretch of the Truckee River. The issue of how best to manage the river corridor is a complicated one, Supervisor Montgomery explained, because the County does not ...more
